What a year actually costs, by country

Every figure below is built from the 242 English-taught programs in the catalog that publish a flat annual fee, grouped across 21 countries. The median first year runs to about €25,376, but that middle hides the real story: the cheapest country on the list costs less for a whole year than the dearest charges in living costs alone.

Read the two columns differently. Tuition is the amount the university itself publishes for the current admissions cycle, verified against its own page. Living costs are planning estimates modeled per city, not quoted figures — treat them as a starting point and replace them in the calculator above with real rent for the city you are looking at.

A country's program count here is lower than its catalog total wherever a university charges by income band or in instalments rather than one annual amount — most visibly in Italy, where the published contribution depends on family income and country of residence. Those programs are left out of the median rather than flattened into it, because a €146 first instalment is not a year of medical school. Fees shown in another currency are converted for comparison; the university's own figure is the one on its program page.

FAQs

How much does it cost to study medicine in Europe?

Across the 242 programs in our catalog that publish a flat annual fee, the median first year — tuition plus a typical local living estimate — is about €25,376. The spread is much wider than that middle suggests: North Macedonia comes to roughly €11,870 and Ireland to roughly €71,050. Tuition is taken from the university's own published fee; living costs are planning estimates.

Which European countries are cheapest for medical school?

Six countries come in under €20,000 for a first year including living costs: North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, Romania and Bulgaria. Romania and Bulgaria are the two with real scale — 22 and 11 priced English-taught programs respectively — so they offer the most choice at that level. The country table on this page lists all 21 with the tuition range behind each median.

Is studying medicine in Europe cheaper than North America?

Usually, but not automatically, and the gap depends entirely on where in Europe. Ireland's median first year works out near €71,050 and the United Kingdom near €56,600 — international-student rates at both — while six countries sit under €20,000. We publish verified European fees only and do not carry Canadian or American tuition figures, so compare these against the exact schools you are considering at home rather than against a remembered average.

What costs should I budget for beyond tuition?

Housing and day-to-day living are the two that dominate, and together they run from about €6,800 a year in the cheapest cities we model to about €15,000 in Dublin. Then add health insurance, flights home, and the one-off paperwork before you arrive — apostilles, certified translations, visa fees and any enrollment deposit, which reaches €5,000 at some universities. Every one of these is a separate, editable field in the calculator above.

Can I use this calculator for dentistry and pharmacy programs?

Yes. The calculator covers Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy across every country in the catalog. Open it from any program page and the confirmed tuition, along with a living-cost preset for that city, is filled in for you — though a fee that is banded by income or charged in instalments is deliberately left at €0, because no single annual number would be honest.
