Medicine in Czechia: 14 Programs at 4 Schools

Czechia is the opposite of Italy. Italy spreads 25 programs across 21 universities, roughly one each; Czechia packs 14 into 4, which means a single Czech institution often gives you two or three routes to consider from one application effort. The wider pattern is in how much choice a country actually gives you.

Charles University alone runs 8 of the 14, through separate faculties in Prague, Pilsen and Hradec Králové. Those faculties price independently — Prague's First Faculty charges €24,250 for medicine while Pilsen charges €15,726 — so "Charles University" is not one price, it is four. The other three are Masaryk in Brno, Palacký in Olomouc and the University of Ostrava.

Medicine — all six-year courses.

Charles University runs two further medicine faculties in Prague, at €16,935 and €24,250. The €24,250 route is the most expensive medicine program in Central Europe and the €12,000 Ostrava route the cheapest in the country — a 2x spread inside one small country, almost all of it explained by which faculty you apply to rather than which city you live in.

Dentistry — five years everywhere.

Pharmacy — and this is where the money is.

Masaryk charges €15,323 for medicine and €7,500 for pharmacy — the subject halves the fee at one university. Czechia is an entrance-exam country. Charles, Masaryk and Ostrava all select by faculty science examination in biology, chemistry and often physics; Palacký is the exception, admitting by interview, and Hradec Králové dentistry combines an exam with an interview.

The exams are set and marked by the faculty, sat in English, and the mark is the admission — there is no national ranking and no MCAT. Charles organizes sittings in a number of countries, which can save a flight.

Charles also runs one of the longest application windows in Europe, opening 1 December and closing 5 September for one of its faculties — nine months. Czech living costs sit above Poland's and well above Romania's, so the total is closer to Poland's than the headline fee suggests. Ostrava at €12,000 remains the cheapest complete year in the country by a clear margin.
