Medicine in Romania: 22 Programs, from €7,000

Romania is the most affordable EU route into an English-taught medical degree that still gives you real choice: 12 universities, not one or two. You enter a six-year MD straight from high school, tuition sits mostly under €10,000, and the degree is an EU qualification from day one.

The less obvious reason to look here is disclosure. All 22 Romanian programs publish their exact entry requirements and a confirmed flat fee — a completeness no other country on this site matches at that scale. You can research a Romanian shortlist almost entirely from the university pages, which is not true of Italy, and it is worth more than it sounds when you are comparing a dozen options. What Romania does not publish well is dates. Only 5 of the 22 name a specific calendar deadline; the rest describe the cycle in words. That is the one thing you will have to email about, and the application window can be three days explains why leaving it late is risky.

All 12 English-taught medicine programs with a confirmed 2026-27 annual fee, cheapest first. Every one is six years and every one publishes an interview.

The shape of that list matters more than its floor. Eleven of the twelve sit at €10,000 or below, and the four largest, best-known universities — Carol Davila, Iuliu Hațieganu, Grigore T. Popa and Victor Babeș — are clustered at €9,000 to €10,000. You are not trading reputation for price inside Romania the way you would between countries.

Titu Maiorescu at €15,000 is the outlier and the only private university in the set.

Romania is unusual in how much dentistry it teaches in English — 9 programs, against 12 in medicine. Most countries manage two or three.

Craiova's €6,500 is the cheapest verified dental fee in the European Union, and Romanian dentistry undercuts Romanian medicine at six of the nine universities that teach both. Note the duration though: Romanian dentistry runs six years, where most of Europe runs five. Selection is also looser here than in medicine: only two of the nine dentistry programs interview, and four admit on file review alone.

One pharmacy program completes the set — Victor Babeș in Timișoara at €8,000 over five years.

Sibiu is the cheapest complete first year in the country at roughly €14,250, and Cluj-Napoca the dearest at €18,350 — a €4,100 spread that has as much to do with rent as with tuition. Every one of the 12 medicine programs publishes an interview. That is unique among the affordable destinations — Poland interviews at 9 of 25, and Italy at none of 25 — and it changes how you prepare. You are not only assembling a transcript; you are being assessed as a person, usually on motivation, ethics and communication rather than on science recall.

There is no MCAT requirement anywhere in Romania, and no bachelor's degree requirement — entry is direct from secondary school. Two universities run a written entrance exam in dentistry — Lucian Blaga Sibiu and Titu Maiorescu — and the rest of the dental set admits on file review or interview.

The document chain is the real deadline. Apostilles and certified translations run in sequence and commonly take four to eight weeks, and Romania publishes a dated deadline at only 5 of 22 programs, so you cannot rely on a calendar to pace you. Plan this from day one rather than from graduation. Romanian medical universities are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and Romania is an EU member, so the degree carries the EU recognition route within Europe.

For the USA, the school must be listed in the World Directory with an ECFMG Sponsor Note covering your graduation year — coverage is year-specific, and a listing alone is not enough.
