Why there is no single answer
Students often ask for "the European deadline". It does not exist. Each country, and often each university, sets its own calendar, and the spread is enormous:
**Earliest — the UK.** Applications for medicine and dentistry close in mid-October, roughly eleven months before you would start. You also need the UCAT, sat the preceding summer. If you are reading this in spring hoping to start that autumn in the UK, you have already missed it.
**Fixed annual — Italy.** The IMAT runs once a year. There is no second sitting. See the IMAT explained.
**Spring to summer — much of Central and Eastern Europe.** Many universities in Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Serbia and the Balkans run admission from roughly March through July or August, some in multiple phases, some rolling until places fill.

Building your timeline backwards
Work from the deadline, not from today:
1. **Pick your target intake** and find the real deadline on each shortlisted programme's official page.
2. **Subtract the entrance exam.** UCAT (summer before), IMAT (annual), or a university science exam — each has its own registration window that closes before the application deadline.
3. **Subtract document legalization.** Apostilles and certified translations routinely take four to eight weeks and are the single most common reason people miss a deadline. Start these first.
4. **Subtract English evidence.** IELTS/TOEFL sittings book out; some schools accept an English-medium schooling letter instead.
5. **Leave room for the visa.** Acceptance is not the end — see the visa center.
Practical advice
Apply across more than one deadline window. An October UK application and a June Romanian application are not competing with each other; together they mean one missed window does not cost you the year.
