The subject rule that lets more people apply

The published academic requirement is AAA including two sciences, with at least one of biology or chemistry, plus GCSE English and mathematics and science requirements. UCAT is used for the active cycle, with academic and UCAT shortlisting followed by a multiple mini interview.

That phrasing is more open than the rest of the UK field. Imperial requires an A specifically in biology and an A specifically in chemistry. Exeter asks A*AA including biology and chemistry. Edinburgh and Aberdeen both require chemistry plus one other named science. Lancaster requires two sciences and only one of them has to be biology or chemistry — so a candidate holding chemistry and physics, or biology and mathematics, is eligible here in a way they are not everywhere else.

For an applicant whose A-level choices were made before medicine was the plan, that is the difference between having a UK option and not having one.

The lowest all-in of the four

£48,620 per academic year for international students, confirmed for 2026/27, which converts to about €56,219 at the ECB reference rate this site uses for planning — 1 EUR = GBP 0.86483, taken on 2026-06-15. Five years is roughly €281,100 in tuition, ranking seventeenth of the 35 UK medicine records with a published fee on annual rate and nineteenth on total.

Lancaster's living costs run about €10,400 a year on this site's presets, the lowest of the four UK schools profiled today and among the cheapest UK locations in this catalog. Five years is about €52,000, bringing the all-in figure to roughly €333,100.

Set against Edinburgh, also profiled today, the gap is about €118,100 — because Edinburgh runs six years, charges more per year, and sits in a city costing €12,000 a year against Lancaster's €10,400. Three variables compounding in the same direction is how UK medicine produces gaps that large between schools whose annual fees are within €7,000 of each other.

Five years, and the UCAS clock

The degree runs five years to an MBChB from the Medical School, on the route recorded as Medicine and Surgery. English is the clinical language, so there is no local-language requirement of the kind that applies across every non-English-speaking country in this catalog.

The UCAS calendar applies. The 2026-entry deadline of 15 October 2025 at 18:00 UK time has passed. For 2027 entry, UCAS opens 12 May 2026, the medicine deadline is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, UCAT registration opens 12 May 2026 with booking from 23 June and testing 13 July to 24 September 2026, and interviews run university-specific dates usually November to March.

English, health, DBS and fitness-to-practise clearance are required, as across UK medicine.
