Medicine in Greece in English: 5 Universities

Greece opened English-taught medical degrees at its public universities relatively recently, which makes it one of the newer options in Europe — and one that is still comparatively under-subscribed by North American applicants.

The universities themselves are not new: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens are among the oldest and largest in the country. What is new is the English-taught track. Because these programs are recent, confirm intake details directly with the university — published information changes more often than at long-established destinations.

Greek programs admit on an academic file plus a program-specific assessment or interview, rather than a competitive written entrance exam of the Bulgarian or Hungarian type. There is no MCAT requirement.

Greece is an EU member state, so the degree carries EU/EEA professional-recognition rights, and Greek medical schools are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. One extra check worth doing for newer English-taught tracks: confirm with ECFMG that your specific program and graduation year are covered, since recently launched tracks can lag in directory records.

Six English-taught programs at five universities — five medicine and one pharmacy.

Three of the five medicine programs are priced identically at €12,000, so within Greece the fee separates only Athens and Crete from the rest. Athens at €17,000 is the most expensive and also the capital; Larissa and Patras are the cheapest places to live.

Four of the five interview. Greece is an interview country rather than an exam country, which is unusual for the region — Bulgaria next door is the opposite.

The pharmacy program at Athens is €9,000, half what the same university charges for medicine. That subject discount is the pattern in one university, three very different prices.

Patras and Larissa give the cheapest complete first year at about €20,050, and Athens the dearest at €26,250 — a €6,200 spread driven by both tuition and rent moving in the same direction.
