Medicine in Malta and Cyprus, in English

The single biggest hidden cost of an English-taught degree in Central or Eastern Europe is that your patients do not speak English — see will you need the local language?.

Malta and Cyprus largely remove that. English is an official language of Malta and is used routinely in Cypriot higher education and healthcare, so clinical years happen in a language you already work in. For some students that is worth more than a few thousand euro of tuition.

Cypriot medicine was the gap in this table until an official-source audit in August 2026 confirmed both universities' 2026-2027 fees: €23,000 at European University Cyprus, €24,000 for the University of Nicosia's six-year MD and €25,000 for its graduate-entry route.

Queen Mary University of London runs its Barts and The London MBBS in Malta at €39,500/year. You graduate with the London degree while studying on an EU island — materially less than the €65,678 Queen Mary charges internationals in London, though still far above Central Europe.

Malta — 4 programs at 2 universities.

Cyprus — 6 programs at 2 universities, both in Nicosia. The University of Nicosia runs two separate medicine routes.

Both are English-language countries with EU membership, which is the whole proposition: you get the EU recognition route and native-English clinical training without Irish or British prices. Queen Mary Malta at €39,500 is the exception and prices like a UK school.

Pharmacy is dramatically cheaper at both — €9,240 at European University Cyprus against €23,000 for its own medicine, a 2.5x gap at one university and one of the widest subject differentials in Europe.

Both islands carry high living costs — €10,900 and €11,500 a year — which is close to Irish levels and well above the continent. A first year of medicine runs about €33,900 in Nicosia to €37,500 in Malta, and €51,000 at Queen Mary Malta.

The University of Nicosia accepts MCAT 498, or GAMSAT 55 with a minimum of 50 in each section. That makes Cyprus one of the few European destinations with a published, numeric MCAT route — see do you need the MCAT and the admission tests that are not the UCAT.
