The Deadline Is Not Midnight: 110 Programs

A deadline written as a date invites one assumption: that you have until the end of that day. Across this catalog that assumption is wrong far more often than it is right.

110 of the 271 programs publish an actual clock time alongside the closing date. Here is where those times fall:

Four programs out of 110 close at 23:59. Everything else closes during a European working day, and in eleven cases before lunch. The phrase "the deadline is the 29th" is doing a lot of quiet work in those cases, and none of it in your favor.

The remaining 161 programs publish a date with no time attached. That is not permission to submit at 23:59 — it means nobody has told you, and the safe reading is the earliest one.

This is the part that turns a published time into a missed application. Continental Europe runs six hours ahead of Toronto and nine ahead of Vancouver. The United Kingdom runs five and eight.

The same five deadlines, converted:

Read the Lodz row twice. On the west coast, the deadline expires at the exact moment the deadline day begins. A student in Vancouver who plans to "finish it on the 7th" has no 7th.

The UCAS row is the friendly one, and it is worth knowing why: 18:00 UK time is early afternoon across North America, which is the one major European deadline you can comfortably hit on the day. Details of that cycle are in the UCAT and the UK application.

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences publishes its closing time as 6 July 2026 at 00:00 for both medicine and odontology.

Midnight is genuinely ambiguous in ordinary speech — most people hear "the end of the 6th" — but 00:00 on a date is the *first* instant of that date, not the last. Read literally, the application closes as 5 July ends. In Toronto that is 5:00 p.m. on 5 July; in Vancouver, 2:00 p.m. on 5 July. A full day and an evening earlier than the natural reading.

We record the university's wording verbatim rather than reinterpreting it, which is the standing rule for every date on this site. But this is precisely the case to settle by email before you rely on it. Ask the admissions office one question: does the application close at the start or the end of 6 July, and in which time zone?

Lithuania also runs one of the more forgiving exam calendars in Europe, with multiple sittings, so the cost of asking early is nothing — see entrance exams you can sit more than once and dentistry in the Baltics.

The United Kingdom is the single largest block of timed deadlines in the catalog, and it is also the most consistent: 88 UK programs all close at 18:00 UK time. The two dates that matter are these.

50 medicine and dentistry courses close at 18:00 on 15 October, roughly eleven months before entry. 37 pharmacy courses use the UCAS equal-consideration deadline at 18:00 on 14 January — later, and a genuinely different application shape, because pharmacy does not require the UCAT at any of them.

One consequence people miss: an 18:00 UK deadline is not 23:59 UK either. If you are applying from within Europe, the UK deadline closes six hours before the end of the day, not one minute before.

Most programs — 161 of 271 — publish a closing date with no time. That is the larger group, and it needs a rule rather than a guess.

Assume the deadline is the start of the business day, in the university's time zone. If you are wrong you lose nothing. If you assume 23:59 and you are wrong, you lose a cycle. That asymmetry decides it.

There is a second reason to submit early that has nothing to do with the clock. Application portals are busiest in their final hours, document uploads fail, payment confirmations lag, and a portal that will not accept a 40 MB scan at 11 p.m. is not a deadline problem you can appeal. Several programs also run phased or rolling admission where places fill before the published date — the University of Warmia and Mazury publishes four separate phases, each closing at 15:00.

And the deadline is rarely the real constraint anyway. Apostilles and certified translations run four to eight weeks and cannot be parallelized, which is set out in apostilles, translations and transcripts. The date that binds your application is usually a document date, not a portal date.

Write every deadline into your calendar in your own time zone, not theirs. Convert once, at the moment you shortlist, and never do the arithmetic again under pressure. Every verified deadline on the deadline board can be exported to your calendar directly.

Treat the published time as the latest possible moment, and target 48 hours earlier. This is the entire recommendation. It costs nothing and removes every case in this guide.

Ask when the wording is ambiguous. "00:00", "midnight", and a bare date with no time are all worth one email. Put the answer in writing and keep it.
