Do You Need the UCAT? Which European Programs Actually Require It

The University Clinical Aptitude Test is a UK admissions test for medicine and dentistry. Across the 271 English-taught programs verified on this site, 49 name it in their published requirements: 34 UK medicine courses, 14 UK dentistry courses, and exactly one outside the UK.

That one is Queen Mary University of London's MBBS taught in Malta, which records UCAT alongside academics, English and an interview. It is a British degree delivered on a Maltese campus, so the British admissions test travels with it.

No UK pharmacy program requires the UCAT. Not one of the 37 in this catalog. Yet the test is mentioned on a great many UK pharmacy course pages, because universities link to their related medicine and dentistry courses from the same template.

People read the page, see UCAT, and either book a test they do not need or rule out pharmacy on the assumption it is out of reach. Both are avoidable. UK pharmacy selects on grades plus, at most schools, an interview — which is set out in how European medical schools choose between applicants.

When we recorded selection methods for this catalog we deliberately did not log UCAT against any pharmacy program for exactly this reason: a mention in navigation is not a requirement.

Then the UCAT is irrelevant to you, and the question becomes which test your target country runs instead.

Italy uses the IMAT through the Universitaly portal, once a year with no second sitting — see the IMAT guide. Central and Eastern European faculties commonly run their own biology and chemistry entrance examination, sometimes with an interview. The UCAT is sat in the summer before the application cycle, and the UCAS deadline for UK medicine and dentistry is mid-October — nearly a year before you would start. So the sequence is: sit the test in summer, apply by mid-October, interview over winter, start the following autumn.

That means a decision to apply to the UK has to be made roughly eighteen months ahead. Registration and booking close earlier than the test itself, which is the specific detail that catches people. Check the current cycle's dates on the official UCAT site rather than a forum summary.

Universities weigh it differently, and several combine it with academics in a published formula while others use it to shortlist for interview. A score that opens one UK school can be below another's threshold in the same year, so a single number does not tell you where you stand.

It also does not replace the rest of the application. UK medicine and dentistry still require the subject grades, the personal statement, and — at almost every school — an interview.

And it says nothing about your route home afterwards. A UK degree is assessed for North American licensing exactly like any other foreign degree, which is covered in practicing medicine in the US and returning to Canada.

Applying to UK medicine or dentistry, or to Queen Mary in Malta? Sit the UCAT, and plan the summer before. Applying anywhere else in Europe? Do not book it — spend the time on the entrance exam or documents your actual targets require.
