Dentistry in Bulgaria: 3 Programs, €10,000

Bulgaria teaches dentistry in English at three universities, and there is no fourth. All three publish a confirmed flat annual fee for 2026-27.

The identical pricing is unusual and worth pausing on. In Poland the same degree runs €14,000 to €20,900 and in Czechia €14,000 to €24,250. Bulgaria charges one number. That means the fee genuinely cannot distinguish these three, and anyone telling you one is 'better value' on price is describing something that does not exist.

Sofia publishes its fee in both currencies — EUR 10,000 or 19,558.30 BGN per year — which is worth noting because the lev is pegged to the euro, so unlike Poland or Hungary you are not carrying an exchange-rate risk on the tuition line.

Two of the three run five and a half years. Varna runs six.

Varna's extra semester costs about €5,000 in tuition plus roughly €4,200 in living costs — call it €9,000 all in, plus half a year of delayed earnings. On an identical annual fee that is the single largest financial difference between the three, and it is invisible if you compare only the yearly number.

Plovdiv is the cheapest complete first year at about €17,750, and Sofia the dearest at €19,050 — the whole spread is €1,300, driven entirely by rent rather than tuition.

All three admit by written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, taken in English. There is no interview anywhere in Bulgarian dentistry, no MCAT, and no prior degree — entry is direct from secondary school. What you need is a secondary diploma covering biology and chemistry, legalized and translated documents, and either English evidence or the university's own English assessment.

Where they differ sharply is how many chances you get.

Plovdiv publishes six sittings — 15 April, 15 May, 16 June, 17 July and 18 August 2026, with a re-sit on 4 September. Each has its own registration deadline (8 April, 8 May, 9 June, 10 July, 11 August and 30 August). That is the most forgiving dental admission calendar in the country: pick the sitting first, then work back to its deadline.

Varna publishes three open sittings — 4 April, 16 May and 13 June 2026 — and then two further sessions on 16 July and 3 September that are EU-only. If you are Canadian or American, your last realistic test date is 13 June, not September. Its examinations are online, roughly 90 minutes each in biology and chemistry. Sofia runs a single window: applications 27 July to 11 September 2026, examinations 17–18 September, results 22 September, ranking 23 September, enrollment 24 September to 9 October. One shot, and the academic year begins inside that enrollment window — the pattern described in what happens after the entrance exam.

Since the fee is identical, the decision comes down to four things.

How many attempts you want. Plovdiv's six sittings against Sofia's one is the largest practical difference between these universities. If you are testing from another continent and cannot easily return, that matters more than €1,300 of rent.

Whether you can test after June. Varna's EU-only sessions in July and September close off the back half of its calendar for non-EU applicants.

The city. Plovdiv and Varna are regional cities; Sofia is the capital and the most expensive of the three to live in. Most of these programs are not in capitals covers that trade honestly.

The same three universities also teach medicine and pharmacy in English, and the fees differ by subject — Plovdiv charges €10,000 for dentistry and €6,200 for pharmacy. That pattern is in one university, three very different prices.

This is the part that should shape your choice of country before the fee does, because the dental route home is longer than the medical one.
