Medicine in Bulgaria: 11 Programs, €9,000 Up

Bulgaria's distinguishing feature is not that it is cheapest — Serbia, Bosnia and North Macedonia all undercut it — but that it barely varies. Across the five English-taught medicine programs the dearest is 1.1 times the cheapest. Compare that with Italy at 7.8x, where a national figure means almost nothing, and you get the real argument for Bulgaria: a quoted price is a real price.

All 11 programs publish a confirmed flat annual fee. Only 8 of the 11 publish their exact entry requirements, which is the one gap — the three pharmacy programs are the ones that do not.

Every medicine course runs six years; dentistry runs five and a half at Sofia and Plovdiv and six at Varna; pharmacy runs five.

Plovdiv charges €10,000 for medicine and €6,200 for pharmacy — a €3,800 gap at one university, the pattern described in one university, three very different prices.

Two of the five cities are small: Pleven and Stara Zagora are regional centres rather than capitals, which is where the low rent comes from and also what you are choosing to live in for six years. Most of these programs are not in capitals covers that trade honestly.

Bulgaria is an entrance-exam country, not an interview country. Four of the five medicine programs run a written examination in biology and chemistry; Plovdiv admits on file review. That is the opposite of Romania, where all 12 medicine programs interview.

The exam calendar is the part worth planning around. Plovdiv publishes five sittings from 15 April to 18 August with a re-sit on 4 September, each with its own registration deadline — so the sitting you pick sets your deadline, not the other way round. Varna splits its calendar by nationality: some sessions are open and others EU-only. Both patterns are in when you would actually sit the exam and your deadline is not the one on the page.
