Sofia vs Plovdiv vs Varna vs Pleven Compared

This is the useful finding. Between the cheapest and most expensive verified Bulgarian medicine program there is €1,000 a year at entry — about €6,000 across a six-year degree. That is real money but it is not the kind of gap that should override fit. Only one thing widens it, and that is Trakia's declining scale, below.

Compare that with Charles University in Czechia, where the same university charges between €15,726 and €24,250 depending on which faculty admits you, and the contrast is stark. In Bulgaria, choosing on price alone gets you almost nowhere.

So the questions worth asking are the ones cost usually drowns out: which city do you want to live in for six years, how large is the international cohort, and what does the clinical training look like from year three.

Pharmacy is the exception. Plovdiv at €6,200 against Sofia at €8,000 is a 29 percent difference, and across a five-year degree that is roughly €9,000.

Plovdiv's €6,200 also places it among the cheaper verified pharmacy programs anywhere in Europe — the continental floor is €3,000, at the University of Kragujevac in Serbia. Dentistry, by contrast, is €10,000 at all three universities that publish it. There is no cheaper Bulgarian dental option to find.

Trakia University in Stara Zagora is the only Bulgarian program whose published tuition changes as the course runs. The other four hold a single number for the whole degree. Trakia's official fee table records €9,000 a year for years one and two, €7,500 for years three to five, and €7,000 in year six.

That quietly changes the answer to "which is cheapest". On the year-one figure Trakia ties Pleven at €9,000, which is how it appears in every annual comparison including the table above. Across the whole degree it is €47,500 against Pleven's €54,000 — a €6,500 difference that an annual fee simply cannot show you, because every other Bulgarian program holds its number flat for six years.

One caution before you budget against it. Trakia's 2026-2027 fees were confirmed on 15 August 2026; before that the most recent figure on its pages was a flat €7,500 from the 2024-2025 cycle, and that older number still circulates on third-party sites. Use the university's own fee table, and ask admissions to confirm the scale in writing — a fee that changes three times over a degree is exactly the kind of thing that gets restated as a single average by everyone repeating it.

Since price is nearly flat for medicine and dentistry, choose on city and cohort. Sofia is the capital, the largest, and the busiest. Plovdiv and Varna are smaller cities with long-established international programs, and Varna sits on the Black Sea coast. Pleven is the smallest, and ties Trakia at €9,000 for year one. Trakia, in Stara Zagora, is the cheapest across the full six years once its declining scale is counted.

For pharmacy, Plovdiv's €6,200 is the clear cost winner and the gap is large enough to matter.
