When European Medical School Applications Actually Close, Month by Month

Each program is counted once, under the month named in its published deadline.

May closes 49 programs, more than any other month, and almost all of them are Central and Eastern European faculties admitting for an autumn start the same year. That is a four-month turnaround between deadline and first day.

This is the window that makes Europe different from North America. If it is spring and you want to start in the autumn, you have not missed the year — you are in the middle of the largest application period on the continent.

It is also why the document chain matters so much. A May deadline with an eight-week apostille process means starting paperwork in March, which is exactly the trap set out in apostilles, translations and transcripts.

33 programs close in September, which contradicts the common assumption that everything is finished by summer. Some are second-phase intakes that open only if places remain after the first round; others are simply late-cycle admissions.

That makes September a genuine second chance rather than a formality. If a first application failed in May, the same autumn may still be reachable — though you should expect a compressed visa and housing timeline afterward, and check whether the program is a genuine second phase or a different intake altogether.

Six programs go further and run rolling admission with no fixed date, filling until places are gone. Those reward applying early rather than applying on time.

UK medicine and dentistry close in mid-October for entry the following autumn — roughly eleven months ahead, and the UCAT must be sat the summer before that. Miss it and you are waiting a full year, with no late round to fall back on.

The 45 programs closing in January are a different thing: the UCAS equal-consideration deadline that applies to most other UK courses, including pharmacy. That is why UK pharmacy appears in January and UK medicine in October.

Apply across more than one window. An October UK application and a May Romanian one are not competing with each other, and a rejection in one does not end the cycle. That single habit is the difference between one shot a year and three.

Work each deadline backwards, not forwards: from the closing date, subtract the entrance exam registration, the document legalization, the English test if one is needed, and the time your referees take. What is left is when you actually start.

One program in the catalog publishes no deadline at all: Catholic University Our Lady of Good Counsel in Albania, whose page directs applicants to the newest official call. Where a university has not published, we say so instead of inventing a date.
