Cheapest Medical Schools in Europe, Verified

The EU column is the one to read first. Six of the seven cheapest programs are outside the European Union, which changes the recognition route home and is a larger consideration than the €3,000 you save. Studying medicine in the Western Balkans sets out what that means in practice.

Inside the EU, the cheapest flat fee is €7,000 at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu in Romania.

It is the lowest confirmed number in the catalog and it is real — but it is not a price list.

Italian public universities assess tuition on family income and country of residence. Padua's €2,990 is an all-inclusive contribution for non-EU students residing abroad; what an individual pays depends on the bracket they land in. It is also not the €156 figure that circulates about Italy, which is a regional tax rather than tuition at all.

This is why Padua does not appear in the medians and rankings elsewhere on this site: only genuine flat annual totals are used for comparison. The full mechanism is in what Italian public universities really cost and the fee on the page may not be yours.

The practical consequence: you cannot budget from an assessed figure until the university has assessed you. Treat it as a possible outcome rather than a plan.

At these fee levels, living costs are the larger half. Modeled annual student costs including insurance, in the cheapest university cities:

A complete first year in Štip comes to about €10,620 — less than the living costs alone in Dublin, which run €14,950. That is the real scale of the difference, and it is the argument the whole affordable tier rests on.

Living costs here are modeled planning estimates per city, not quoted prices. Check real rent before committing and build your own number with the cost calculator; cheapest student cities in Europe ranks them all.

Recognition. Six of the seven cheapest sit outside the EU. An EU degree carries the automatic recognition route between member states; a non-EU one does not, and the route home to Canada or the USA runs through ECFMG or the Medical Council of Canada either way. Check your specific school and graduation year before the fee tempts you — how to verify a medical school, medicine licensing in the USA and in Canada.

Course length. Every program in the table above runs six years. A cheap six-year course and a dearer five-year one are not the same purchase — how long is medical school in Europe.

Clinical language. English-taught does not mean English wards. Patients in Sibiu speak Romanian and patients in Štip speak Macedonian, and most of these programs expect you to reach working competence in the local language before clinical years — clinical language requirements.

And what is missing. 11 of the 271 programs on this site still have no confirmed fee for 2026-27, so this list is the cheapest *verified*, not the cheapest that exists. Programs without a published price explains why they are excluded rather than estimated.

Medicine is not the cheapest health degree in Europe, and if your goal is a health profession rather than specifically a medical one, the numbers change sharply.

Pharmacy starts at €3,000 at the University of Kragujevac in Serbia and €3,500 at the University of Belgrade — below every medicine fee except Padua's assessed figure. Cheapest pharmacy schools in Europe.

Dentistry starts at €6,000 at Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, and €6,500 at Craiova, which is the cheapest inside the EU. Cheapest dental schools in Europe.

Within a single university the subject often moves the fee more than the country does — Plovdiv charges €10,000 for medicine and €6,200 for pharmacy. One university, three very different prices has the pattern.
