The Most Expensive Medical Schools in Europe, and What You Get for It

Ranked by verified 2026-2027 annual tuition for international students:

15 verified programs charge more than €60,000 a year. 45 charge more than €50,000. Every single one of the 45 is British or Irish.

This is not a coincidence of our sample. It follows from how the two systems are funded.

Across most of continental Europe, medical faculties are state institutions that price their English-taught track as a parallel program — often high by local standards but anchored to a public-sector cost base. In the UK and Ireland, international fees are set commercially and are explicitly cross-subsidizing: home students are capped, overseas students are not, and medicine is the most expensive subject either system teaches because of clinical placement costs.

The practical consequence for you is that the UK and Ireland are not "the top of a European price range". They are a separate market that happens to share a continent. Comparing a €16,129 median European medicine program to a €46,136 median UK one is comparing two different funding models, not two points on a curve.

Annual figures hide the compounding. Multiply by the length of the degree and the gap stops being abstract:

Cambridge medicine — €81,581 a year across six years is roughly €489,486 in tuition alone, before you have paid for anywhere to live.

University of East Sarajevo medicine — €3,579 a year across six years is roughly €21,474.

That is a difference of about €468,000 for two degrees that both end in a primary medical qualification. It is the single largest financial decision most applicants to this site will make, and it is usually made on far less analysis than a house purchase a tenth the size.

One caution on doing this arithmetic yourself: at several universities the fee is not the same every year, so multiplying year one by six gives the wrong answer in both directions. We covered which ones separately.

Being straight about this matters more than the ranking.

It does buy teaching in a country whose regulator you may want to be licensed by, clinical placements inside the NHS or the Irish health service, and a qualification whose name is recognized instantly by employers and admissions committees anywhere. For someone intending to stay and practice in the UK or Ireland, those are not small.

It does not buy an easier route back to North America. A UK or Irish medical degree is a foreign medical degree for USMLE and MCC purposes exactly as a Romanian one is. The US licensing route and the Canadian route run through the same examinations and the same matching systems regardless of which side of this price range you studied on. Paying €489,486 rather than €21,474 does not shorten that path by a day.

Three questions worth answering before you accept.

Is the fee fixed for the whole degree, or does it rise? Ask for the schedule for every year in writing, not just year one. Several UK schools publish a higher rate for clinical years.

Where do you actually intend to practice? If the answer is the UK or Ireland, the premium is buying something real. If the answer is the US or Canada, you are paying a large amount for a credential that will be treated as international either way.

What is the honest total? Add living costs to tuition with the cost calculator and compare the whole number against two or three programs from the under €10,000 list. Not because cheap is better, but because the difference should be a decision rather than an accident.
