Pharmacy in the Baltics: 2 Programs, 1 Live

Kaunas is the cheapest English-taught pharmacy degree inside the European Union. Its published structure is EUR 5,600 a year for study years one to three, rising to EUR 5,700 for years four and five, for EUR 28,200 across the degree.

Only four English-taught pharmacy programs in Europe cost less, and every one of them is outside the EU: two in Serbia at EUR 3,000 and EUR 3,500, and two in North Macedonia at EUR 5,000. Kaunas even undercuts Albania at EUR 6,000.

That is the finding worth carrying away from this guide. The usual assumption is that leaving the European Union is how you find a cheap pharmacy degree. At this end of the market it buys you EUR 600 a year against North Macedonia — about EUR 3,000 across five years — and costs you the automatic EU recognition route. Adding modeled living costs in Kaunas of about EUR 8,450 a year, a first year comes to roughly EUR 14,050, and the whole degree to about EUR 70,450.

Riga Stradins University is one of the better-known destinations in the region and it appears in our catalog with a five-year professional master's degree in pharmacy.

Its current September 2026 English undergraduate intake list does not include Pharmacy. No dates apply until that route is confirmed, and there is no confirmed fee.

That needs stating carefully. It does not mean the program has been discontinued, and it does not mean Riga Stradins has stopped teaching in English — the university runs dentistry and medicine in English with published fees and a two-intake calendar. It means that for this cycle, the English-language pharmacy route is not in the published intake materials.

Riga does publish what it would want academically: a secondary qualification with a chemistry and biology background, English, and document evaluation.

If Riga is where you want to study pharmacy, write to the International Admissions Office and ask directly whether the English-language pharmacy program is open for 2026-27. Ask for the fee across all five years in the same email. Do not infer from the university's medicine and dentistry listings that pharmacy is running.

This is a recurring pattern worth recognizing across Europe. A university's flagship English programs are well documented while a smaller route quietly drops out of the intake list, and the requirements page stays up. We track programs in that state in programs without a published price.

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences asks for a secondary qualification with chemistry and biology, English, an entrance assessment or interview, and document recognition.

The entrance assessment is the part to plan for. LSMU runs test and interview sessions rather than admitting purely on documents, which distinguishes it from Vilnius University's approach in other disciplines and means you should expect to be assessed rather than simply ranked.

On dates, LSMU's 2026 online application system is active and the deadline is set by the 2026 LSMU international admission process rather than published as a standing date on the program page. For reference, its dentistry route closes 6 July 2026 at 00:00 and opened 1 November 2025 — a useful indication of the university's rhythm, though you should confirm the pharmacy dates directly rather than assuming they match.

LSMU also warns applicants to apply early because visa and recognition processing is required. That is worth taking literally: Lithuanian credential recognition is a separate step from the application and it takes time.

There is no UCAT, IMAT or other standardized admissions test.

Lithuania and Latvia are both EU member states, so a qualification from either carries the automatic EU and EEA recognition route between member states.

Both programs run five years, which clears the US duration screen that the four-year British MPharm does not — the single most consequential structural fact in European pharmacy for an American reader, set out in the five-year rule.

The language condition applies as it does across continental Europe, and the two records phrase it differently. LSMU states that Lithuanian is needed for patient-facing practical training. Riga Stradins states that Latvian is important for patient-facing practice and local registration — note that Riga ties the language to registration, not only to training, which is the firmer of the two formulations.

Neither language is one most applicants arrive with, and pharmacy places you in community and hospital settings during the degree rather than only at the end. Ask how many hours of language teaching sit in the timetable and what level you must reach before placements begin.

For North America, both sit where every European degree sits: the FPGEC route in the United States and the PEBC route in Canada run their own evaluation of any foreign pharmacy qualification regardless of where it was awarded. Our pharmacy licensing guide covers those routes.

So the practical position: the Baltics currently offer one live English-taught pharmacy option, and it happens to be the cheapest in the European Union. Kaunas at EUR 5,600 a year, five years, EU recognition, an entrance assessment and a language requirement. Riga may reopen its route, and it is worth one email to find out, but it is not something to plan a cycle around.
