Medicine in Latvia & Lithuania in English

Rīga Stradiņš University, the University of Latvia, Vilnius University, and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have taught international students in English for decades. They sit in the middle of the European price range — more than the Balkans, far less than Ireland — while offering EU degrees.

That EU status is the practical draw: an EU/EEA medical qualification carries professional-recognition rights inside the EU that a non-EU degree does not, which matters if you might practice in Europe rather than return to North America.

Latvia concentrates its English-taught health programs at Rīga Stradiņš University (medicine and dentistry) and the University of Latvia (medicine), both in Riga. Lithuania splits between Vilnius University in the capital and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences in Kaunas, which together cover medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.

On price, Lithuania holds the cheapest entry points in both medicine (€12,800) and pharmacy (€5,600); Latvia's University of Latvia is the single cheapest medicine program in either country at €11,850.

Lithuania has the most depth — five programs at two universities, covering all three subjects. Estonia has exactly one, medicine at the University of Tartu, so choosing Estonia means choosing Tartu; there is no second application to make inside the country. Latvia sits between them with four programs at two Riga universities.

The Lithuanian pharmacy fee of €5,600 is the cheapest verified pharmacy inside the European Union, and it is less than half what the same university charges for medicine.

Riga is the cheapest complete first year in the Baltics at about €20,500, and Vilnius the dearest at €23,050. The band is narrow — roughly €2,500 — so the city is not the deciding factor here that it is in Romania or the UK.

The Baltics are unusually varied in selection for such a small region. Vilnius runs its own entrance examination, LSMU and the University of Latvia interview, and Tartu and Rīga Stradiņš admit on grades and file review.

Vilnius publishes multiple online sittings across a single cycle — six of them in the last one — which makes it one of the more forgiving systems in Europe if a single test day goes badly. But it also publishes the restriction that catches people: non-EU applicants must test earlier than the final sitting.
