Medicine in Hungary: 4 Universities, Real Costs
Semmelweis, Debrecen, Pécs and Szeged teach medicine in English. Verified 2026-27 tuition of €14,316 to €17,863, the entrance exams, and the deadlines.
Quick Answer
Four Hungarian universities teach Medicine in English — Semmelweis, Debrecen, Pécs, and Szeged. Verified 2026-2027 annual tuition runs roughly €15,800 to USD 20,900. The 2026-2027 application windows have now closed at all four: they ran from 31 May to 30 June 2026, and Debrecen stopped taking applications for its September 2026 intake before that, citing the volume received. The next intake to plan for is September 2027, for which Debrecen has already published a final deadline of 15 May 2027. Admission is by an entrance exam (Biology and Chemistry) and/or interview. Confirm each figure on the official program page before applying.
Source Status
Tuition and deadlines below are verified 2026-2027 figures quoted from the official university program and admissions pages, with the date each was checked. Deadlines that have passed are labeled as closed rather than removed, so you can see the shape of a Hungarian cycle. Recognition claims cite the MCC and ECFMG/USMLE routes and are framed 'verify before acting.'

Verified tuition, and the 2026-2027 deadlines as published
2026-2027 figures, each linking to the official program page. Every deadline in this table has passed. They are shown as the universities published them, because the shape of the cycle is what you need in order to plan the next one.
| University | Annual tuition | 2026-2027 application deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Semmelweis University | USD 20,900 | Closed 31 May 2026 |
| University of Debrecen | USD 16,900 | Closed early — see below |

| University of Szeged | €15,800 | Closed 15 June 2026 (23:59 CET) |
Hungary also offers Dentistry and Pharmacy in English. Track every date on the deadline board.
Debrecen closed its September 2026 intake early
The University of Debrecen stopped accepting applications for the September 2026 Medicine and Dentistry intake ahead of its published deadline. Its official admissions page attributes this to "an exceptionally high number of applications received" and states that "The application period for the September 2027 intake will open later this year, and the final application deadline will be May 15, 2027."
Two things follow from that. If Debrecen is on your list, September 2027 is the cycle to work towards, and its date is already published while the other three universities' are not. And more generally, a Hungarian deadline is a last possible date rather than a safe one — a capped intake can fill before it arrives, so apply at the start of a window rather than at the end of it.
Planning the September 2027 intake
For 2026-2027 the four universities opened between 1 November 2025 (Pécs) and 12 January 2026 (Semmelweis) and closed between 31 May and 30 June 2026, with entrance examinations running from early March through mid-July. Expect a broadly similar rhythm for September 2027, and expect the dates to be published in the autumn.
Only Debrecen has published a 2027 date so far. Every date on this site is stored verbatim from the university's own page with the date it was checked, and none is carried forward from a previous cycle — so check the deadline board and the official program pages rather than assuming this cycle will repeat the last one. The wider strategy is in when to apply to European medical schools.
Admission
Hungarian medical schools select via an entrance examination in Biology and Chemistry (sometimes with an interview or physics component). Requirements and the exact exam format are listed on each program page. Learn the exam types on the entrance exams page.
Recognition and coming home
Hungarian medical degrees are EU-recognized and the universities are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. That listing is a starting point for the Canada (MCC) and USA (ECFMG/USMLE) routes, not a guarantee: for the U.S. route the school must also carry an ECFMG Sponsor Note covering your graduation year, and you must still complete each process in full. Verify current requirements with the official regulators before acting.
FAQs
How much is medical school in Hungary?
Verified 2026-2027 annual tuition is about €15,800 to USD 20,900 depending on the university.
When are the Hungary medical school deadlines?
The 2026-2027 windows have closed. They ran to 31 May 2026 at Semmelweis, 15 June at Szeged and 30 June at Pécs, and Debrecen closed its September 2026 Medicine and Dentistry intake early because of application volume. The only published date for the next cycle is Debrecen's final deadline of 15 May 2027 for the September 2027 intake; the others are expected to publish in the autumn. Confirm on each program page.
Do I need an entrance exam for Hungary?
Yes — typically Biology and Chemistry, sometimes with an interview. See the entrance exams page.
Is a Hungarian medical degree valid in Canada or the USA?
The degree supports those pathways, but recognition runs through the MCC or ECFMG/USMLE. See the pathways hub.
Can I study Dentistry or Pharmacy in English in Hungary too?
Yes. All four universities offer English-taught Dentistry and Pharmacy alongside Medicine.
Have I missed the intake if I am reading this in August?
For Hungary, yes — all four universities have closed their 2026-2027 applications, so the next Hungarian start is September 2027. That does not mean the year is lost elsewhere: a number of programs in Central and Eastern Europe still close in late August and September. The spread is set out in the European medical school deadline calendar on this site.
